Framed Print : Coloured TEM of Chlamydia sp. bacteria
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Coloured TEM of Chlamydia sp. bacteria
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a no. of spherical bacteria Chlamydia sp. (yellow), a genus of virus-like micro- organisms that cause disease in man & birds (unlike most bacteria Chlamydia lives & grows only inside cells). Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for some 50% of cases of non-specific urethritis (NSU) in the U.K. (which if untreated may lead to serious pelvic inflammatory disease in women, possibly leading to sterility). When diagnosed early, chlamydial infections are readily treated with a 2-3 week course of antibiotics (tetracycline or erythromycin). Magnification: X 17, 600 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Chlamydia sp. bacteria, revealing their spherical shape and vibrant yellow hue. Chlamydia is a genus of virus-like micro-organisms that pose a threat to both humans and birds, causing various diseases. Unlike most bacteria, Chlamydia has the unique ability to thrive exclusively inside host cells. Among its numerous strains, Chlamydia trachomatis stands out as it accounts for approximately 50% of cases related to non-specific urethritis (NSU) in the United Kingdom. If left untreated, NSU can progress into severe pelvic inflammatory disease in women, potentially leading to infertility. Fortunately, early detection allows for effective treatment through a course of antibiotics lasting two to three weeks such as tetracycline or erythromycin. This emphasizes the importance of timely diagnosis when dealing with chlamydial infections. The magnification level used for this TEM image was an impressive X 17,600 at 35mm size. The photograph not only provides valuable insights into the structure and characteristics of these bacterial organisms but also serves as a reminder of the significance in understanding and combating sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia. This remarkable image from Science Photo Library sheds light on the microscopic world where microbes such as Chlamydia sp. reside—a realm crucial for bacteriology research and microbiology advancements aimed at safeguarding public health worldwide.
