EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a remarkable artwork titled "Ecce homo front Marbling year number 1499 back". Created using a mixed technique on basswood, this piece measures 40 x 31 cm and holds an air of mystery with its unmarked front. However, the back reveals a significant clue - it is dated: ÔÇó 1 ÔÇó 4 ÔÇó 9 ÔÇó 9 ÔÇó. The artwork itself features banners adorned with powerful words and phrases. The central banner reads "Ecce homo" meaning "behold the man" in Latin, while other banners display intriguing messages such as "Great hu [n] c et dimitte nob [is] barraba [m] l" and "Nos lege [m] hab [emus] et secu [ndu[m]] lege[m] is[e] mori, q[uia] filiu[m] dei se fec[it]". These phrases evoke deep contemplation about humanity's relationship with divinity. At the bottom of the frame attached to the board, we find another enigmatic inscription: "Est fera plebs ausa Dampnare jh [, esu] m sine caus[a]". This phrase adds an additional layer of intrigue to this already thought-provoking artwork. Although not attributed to any specific artist or company, this piece bears resemblance to works by German masters from the fifteenth century. Its intricate details and profound symbolism make it a truly mesmerizing addition to any art collection.
