The "Agamemnon" and "Sanspareil" attacking Sebastopol, 1854. Creator: Unknown. The "Agamemnon" and "Sanspareil" attacking Sebastopol, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The "Agamemnon" and "Sanspareil" attacking Sebastopol, 1854. Crimean War: Royal Navy ships....the Agamemnon...opened fire from her large pivot gun on the "Wasp" Fort, to try the range, which the Fort instantly replied to; and in a few minutes more, a large mud battery - Fort Constantine and Fort Alexander - opened their guns, as the ship drew into her station. She appeared to suffer fearfully at this time...She came out of action a perfect wreck, having been struck 240 times; her hull showing gaping holes, her rigging hanging in shreds, her main-yard cut in two places, and almost every spar more or less damaged, including the mainmast, which had two shots in its head. Twice the ship was on fire - a shell having burst in the main-top, and set fire to the mainsail; and a shell having burst in the port side, and run up the lining of the ship, setting fire to the hammock nettings'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the British warships HMS Agamemnon and HMS Sanspareil engaging the fortifications of Sebastopol during the Crimean War in 1854. The Agamemnon, a powerful paddle-wheel steam warship, leads the assault, with the Sanspareil following closely behind. The scene is one of intense battle, as the ships' large pivot guns unleash a barrage of fire towards the fortifications, which respond with an equally fierce counterattack. The Agamemnon, in particular, takes a heavy toll from the fortifications' retaliation. The ship is shown with significant damage, with gaping holes in its hull, rigging hanging in shreds, and both mainmast and mainyard severely damaged. Twice the ship was on fire, the first time from a shell that hit the main-top and set the mainsail alight, and the second time from a shell that ran up the port side and ignited the hammock nettings. Despite the heavy damage, the Agamemnon continued to fight valiantly, demonstrating the bravery and resilience of the British Navy during this pivotal moment in the Crimean War. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, providing a firsthand account of the battle and the damage sustained by the Agamemnon. This powerful and evocative image offers a glimpse into the intense and often brutal realities of warfare during this period.
