The Fighting Temeraire, 1839. Artist: JMW Turner

The Fighting Temeraire, 1839. The 98-gun ship Temeraire became known as the Fighting Temeraire after its role in Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The ship remained in service until 1838 when she was decommissioned. The painting was thought to represent the decline of Britain's naval power. The Temeraire is shown travelling east, away from the sunset, to evoke a sense of loss. Original work found in The National Gallery Collection. Virgils Tomb

Virgil's Tomb (1785). Wright, Joseph of Derby 1734-1797. Wright travelled in Italy from 1774-76 and produced many fine drawings of classical subjects and geological curiosities. On his return to England Wright used these drawings to produce a number of paintings of Italian subjects, many of which employ dramatic effects of light. Virgil's Tomb, near Naples, was much visited on the ?Grand Tour? due to its picturesque appearance and the great esteem in which the Roman poet Virgil was held in the eighteenth century. Date: 1785

Glencoe Village, on the southern bank of the River Coe where it enters Loch Leven in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands. In the distance you can see the Mountains of Buachaille Etive Mor, Bidean nam Bian, and Ben Nevis Mountains. Near The Three Sisters.
