EDITORS COMMENTS
No. 3810 'County Wicklow', a magnificent 4-4-0 County Class locomotive built in 1906, is proudly displayed at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (GWR). This historic steam engine, named after County Wicklow in Ireland, is a testament to the engineering prowess of its time. The County Class locomotives were designed by George Armstrong and Charles Collett for the GWR, with No. 3810 being the 10th engine of the series. These locomotives were renowned for their power and efficiency, making them ideal for hauling heavy passenger trains on the GWR's extensive network. No. 3810 was built at Swindon Works in 1906 and saw active service until the late 1950s. It was withdrawn from service in 1959 and preserved for the future. The locomotive underwent extensive restoration work in the 1980s and 1990s, bringing it back to its former glory. The locomotive's exterior is adorned with intricate details, including its distinctive green livery and brass fittings. The engine's large driving wheels and powerful cylinders give an indication of the immense power it once possessed. The cab is equipped with a large chimney, which would have belched out thick plumes of steam and smoke as the engine roared down the tracks. No. 3810's presence at the Steam Museum of the GWR is a reminder of the golden age of steam rail travel. Visitors to the museum can marvel at the engine's beauty and learn about its rich history. The locomotive is a popular attraction, drawing steam enthusiasts from around the world to the museum.
