Dead Sea, 1972 satellite image C014 / 4706
Dead Sea. False-colour satellite image of the Dead Sea. North is at top. Deep waters are blue or dark blue, while brighter blues indicate shallow waters or salt ponds (in the south). The pale pink and sand-colored regions are barren desert landscapes, while green indicates sparsely vegetated lands. Denser vegetation appears bright red. The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley and borders Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank. It is one of the worlds saltiest bodies of water. In recent decades, the sea has been shrinking due to diversion of water from the Jordan River, the seas main tributary. Near the centre is the Lisan Peninsula, which forms a land bridge through the Dead Sea. Imaged by the Multispectral Scanner System on the Landsat 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
This satellite image, taken by the Multispectral Scanner System on Landsat 1 in September 1972, showcases the mesmerizing beauty and ecological significance of the Dead Sea. The photograph captures a false-color representation of this iconic Middle Eastern landmark, with north positioned at the top. The deep blue hues symbolize the profound depths of this saline body of water, while brighter blues indicate shallow waters or salt ponds located towards the south. The pale pink and sand-colored regions depict vast stretches of barren desert landscapes that surround the sea. Sparse vegetation is represented by green shades, whereas denser vegetation appears as vibrant red patches. Situated within Jordan Rift Valley and bordered by Jordan, Israel, and the West Bank, the Dead Sea stands as one of Earth's saltiest bodies of water. However, over recent decades it has been shrinking due to diversion from its main tributary -the Jordan River- resulting in significant water loss through evaporation. Prominently featured near its center is the Lisan Peninsula which forms a land bridge across this unique natural wonder. This satellite image provides valuable insights into hydrological patterns and environmental changes occurring within this region. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from Science Photo Library courtesy of NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY (not for commercial use), we are reminded both of our planet's breathtaking diversity and our responsibility to protect these fragile ecosystems for future generations.
