EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases David Hartley, an influential English diplomat and Member of Parliament during the 18th century. In this historic scene, painted by George Romney and engraved by James Walker, Hartley is depicted seated with a scroll in hand. The scroll represents the Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3rd, 1783, which marked the end of the American Revolutionary War. As Minister Plenipotentiary appointed by King George III himself, Hartley played a crucial role in negotiating with the rebel colonies in North America that had declared their independence as the United States of America in 1776. His diplomatic efforts were instrumental in bringing about peace between Britain and its former colonies. The artwork beautifully captures Hartley's formal attire and dignified presence as he fulfills his duties as a royal representative. This monochrome engraving provides a glimpse into European politics during this era and serves as a testament to Hartley's significant contributions to British diplomacy. Published in "The pictorial field-book of the Revolution" (1859), this historical illustration transports us back to a time when negotiations shaped nations and revolutionaries fought for freedom. It stands as both an artistic masterpiece and an important documentation of one man's pivotal role in shaping history.
