Cornea. Light micrograph of a section through a cornea

Cornea. Light micrograph of a section through a cornea, the transparent region at the front of the eye. The outer surface of the cornea is a stratified epithelium (dark pink, upper frame) about five cells thick. The epithelium is supported by a basement membrane known as Bowmans membrane (solid blue line, across centre). Beneath this lies the substantia propria (blue/white), the dense collagenous connective tissue that constitutes the bulk of the cornea. Light entering the eye is bent by the cornea. This assists in the focusing of light onto the retina. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate beauty of the cornea, a transparent region located at the front of the eye. Through a light micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into its complex structure and vital role in our vision. The outer surface of the cornea is depicted as a dark pink stratified epithelium, consisting of approximately five cells thick. Above this layer lies Bowmans membrane, represented by a solid blue line that stretches across the center. Acting as a supportive basement membrane, it provides stability to the delicate epithelium. Beneath these layers lies substantia propria, portrayed in shades of blue and white. This dense collagenous connective tissue forms the bulk of the cornea and contributes to its strength and resilience. As light enters our eyes, it encounters this remarkable organ which plays an essential role in focusing that light onto our retina. The bending of light by the cornea aids in creating clear images for us to perceive. This stunning visual representation not only showcases the structural intricacies but also highlights how crucial each layer is for maintaining healthy vision. It serves as a reminder of both nature's artistry and science's ability to unravel its mysteries through histological examination.
