EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegant uniform worn by Princess Elizabeth during her time in the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) from 1949 to 1953. The fabric of this remarkable attire, made of wool barathea by Sandon and Co Ltd on Savile Row in London, exudes sophistication and prestige. Princess Elizabeth held the honorary commission of Brigadier within the WRAC, a position she assumed after the ATS was succeeded by this newly formed organization. However, upon ascending to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, she resigned from these appointments. It is worth noting that Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother had been Commandant-in-Chief of the ATS since 1940 and was subsequently appointed Commandant-in-Chief of the WRAC when it was established in 1949. The uniform itself bears significant historical significance. Adorning its left breast pocket are several medal ribbons representing notable honors: Royal Order of Victoria and Albert; British War Medal 1939-45; King George V Silver Jubilee Medal 1935; and King George VI Coronation Medal 1937. These ribbons serve as a testament to Princess Elizabeth's dedication and service to her country during times of war and celebration. This extraordinary image provides us with a glimpse into an important chapter in Princess Elizabeth's life before she became one of history's most beloved monarchs.
