Ruptured heart
Ruptured heart. Gross specimen of a heart that has ruptured in the parietal region (dark blood clots, lower centre, and red region, centre). The heart has also suffered tissue death (infarction), which causes the pain of a heart attack. The heart sac (pericardium) has an inner serous layer, the outermost layer of which is the parietal layer. Such ruptures can occur as a result of a heart attack. In a heart attack, the blood supply from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle is blocked. This cuts off the oxygen supply and the tissue dies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ruptured Heart" showcases a gross specimen of a heart that has suffered from a devastating rupture in the parietal region. The dark blood clots located at the lower center and the red region at the center vividly depict this distressing condition. Additionally, this heart has experienced tissue death, known as infarction, which is responsible for causing excruciating pain similar to that of a heart attack. The pericardium, the protective sac surrounding the heart, can be observed in this image. It consists of an inner serous layer with its outermost layer being called the parietal layer. Such ruptures are often consequences of heart attacks where blockages occur in coronary arteries, cutting off vital oxygen supply to the heart muscle and leading to tissue death. This thought-provoking photograph serves as a powerful reminder of how critical it is to maintain cardiovascular health and seek timely medical attention when experiencing symptoms related to cardiac issues. By highlighting various aspects such as pathology, necrosis, diagnosis, and clinical disorders associated with cardiac conditions like rupture or infarction, it offers valuable insights into these life-threatening situations. Captured by Science Photo Library's expert lensmanship and scientific expertise, this print not only educates but also evokes emotions about our fragile existence and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive healthcare practices for maintaining optimal organ function.
