Antique Framed Print : English oak leaf pores, SEM
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
English oak leaf pores, SEM
English oak leaf pores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stomata (round) on the underside of a leaf from an English oak (Quercus robur) tree. Stomata are pores that open and close in order to regulate gas exchange in a plant. A pair of specialized cells known as guard cells (sausage-shaped), control the size of the opening by swelling to close the pore and shrinking to open it. Stomata are found mainly on the underside of leaves. Magnification: x347 when printed 10 centimetres wide.False colour SEM of oak leaf stomata (Quercus robur)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of English oak leaf pores, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the round stomata on the underside of a Quercus robur leaf, which play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange within plants. Stomata are specialized pores that open and close to control respiration and transpiration processes. The false color SEM emphasizes the stunning details of these stomata, highlighting their green hue against the leaf's surface. Each stoma is surrounded by two guard cells, resembling elongated sausages, responsible for adjusting its size. These guard cells swell to close the pore or shrink to open it, ensuring optimal gas exchange for plant survival. With a magnification of x347 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this print offers an up-close view into the fascinating world of plant anatomy. It serves as a reminder of nature's complexity and resilience while showcasing botanical wonders that often go unnoticed by our naked eyes. Whether you're passionate about botany or simply appreciate natural beauty, this print from Science Photo Library will undoubtedly captivate your imagination with its vibrant colors and intricate details.
