Calots spinal surgery, 19th century

Calots technique was described in 1896 in a paper he read to the Academy of Medicine in Paris, and the operation is named after him. An orthopaedic institute he founded is also now named after him. The artwork showcases French surgeon Jean-Francois Calot performing an operation on a patient suffering from Potts disease, also known as tuberculous spondylitis. Potts disease is a severe curvature of the spine caused by tuberculosis, and this groundbreaking procedure was named after Dr. Calot himself. In 1896, he presented his technique to the esteemed Academy of Medicine in Paris, forever leaving his mark on the field of medicine. The image transports us back to a time when surgical technology was still evolving. We see the dedicated physician meticulously operating while surrounded by nurses and other medical professionals in an early operating room setting. This historical illustration serves as a reminder of how far we have come in treating such complex conditions.
