EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th century illustration, titled "White Rhinoceros. Sketch 121," by the renowned English artist and explorer, John Thomas Baines, we witness an exhilarating moment of the African wilderness. The White Rhinoceros, scientifically known as Ceratotherium simum, is the larger of the two rhinoceros species native to Africa. This powerful and endangered mammal is depicted in mid-action, charging towards an unseen hunter, its long, curved horns raised high. Baines, a prolific illustrator and explorer, documented his experiences during his expeditions to southern Africa between 1820 and 1875. This illustration, created between 1859 and 1871, is a testament to his keen observation skills and artistic talent. The White Rhinoceros, with its distinctive square lip and long, pendulous ears, is rendered with remarkable detail and accuracy. The image evokes a sense of adventure and danger, as the rhinoceros, the largest of the Eutheria order and a member of the Ceratotherium subfamily, charges with unbridled ferocity. The hunter, though not visible in the illustration, is likely pursuing the animal for its valuable horns, which were highly sought after in the colonial era for their use in traditional medicine and as decorative items. This illustration serves as a reminder of the rich natural history of Africa and the exploration and discovery that took place during the 19th century. It also underscores the importance of preserving endangered species like the White Rhinoceros, which continues to face threats from poaching and habitat loss. The image is a valuable addition to any collection of African wildlife illustrations and a testament to the legacy of John Thomas Baines as a masterful artist and explorer.
