EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable sea chart of the Northern Dvina River, created by the talented duo Jan Luyken and Johannes van Keulen (I) in collaboration with an unknown artist. Dating back to the period between 1681 and 1799, this map offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of cartography during that era. The intricate details depicted on this sea chart transport us to the Russian port city of Arkhangelsk, situated along the majestic Northern Dvina River as it gracefully flows into the White Sea. The stone figures adorning its borders add a touch of elegance and grandeur to this historical representation. Intriguingly, amidst all these geographical elements, we spot figures donning fur hats accompanied by none other than tame bear children – a testament to both nature's wonders and human curiosity during that time. Moreover, this particular sea chart provides valuable information about distance measurements in various languages such as German, Spanish, English, and French miles. Additionally, it presents degree distribution for those seeking precise navigational guidance across these treacherous waters. As we delve into Quint Lox's stunning print from Liszt Collection featuring this extraordinary piece of artistry and history combined, we are reminded once again of humanity's ceaseless quest for knowledge about our world's geography throughout different periods in time.
