EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fascinating sea chart depicting the coast of The Gambia and parts of Senegal, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Created by Jan Luyken in Amsterdam between 1683 and 1799, this intricate engraving is a true work of art. The title on the object reveals its extensive coverage from Cape Verde to Rio de Serraliones, with two compass roses indicating that the North is positioned on the left. At the top center of the chart, we find the title along with the publisher's address. Interestingly, next to this information stands a dark-skinned man wielding an ax about to confront two menacing snakes. A monkey can be seen fleeing from these reptilian creatures while two buffalo graze peacefully in the background. Intriguingly placed at bottom right are enchanting mermaids accompanied by a sea snake near a scale denoting distances in German, Spanish, English or French miles. This detailed representation provides valuable navigational information for sailors traversing these treacherous waters. The presence of sailing ships and boats further adds depth to this composition while monsters of the sea lurk beneath its surface. Monkeys and apes also make an appearance throughout this artwork. Overall, this remarkable piece offers not only geographical insights but also glimpses into mythical elements intertwined with real-world features. Its historical significance makes it an invaluable addition to any collection or display dedicated to maritime exploration and cartography enthusiasts alike.
