EDITORS COMMENTS
This studio shot showcases a well-preserved specimen of the Antarctic Isopod, Glyptonotus antarcticus, collected during Sir Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913, also known as the Terra Nova Expedition. The Terra Nova expedition was a groundbreaking scientific endeavor that amassed thousands of geological and zoological specimens, including this impressive marine crustacean. The Antarctic Isopod, a member of the Isopoda order and the family Chaetiliidae, is a deep-sea dweller related to woodlice. It is native to the Antarctic and the Antarctic Peninsula, thriving in the cold, dark depths of the ocean. With its distinctive elongated body and numerous legs, this isopod is a testament to the incredible biodiversity of the Antarctic region. The specimen is displayed in a spirit jar, a common preservation method used during the expedition to keep the collected organisms alive and intact during the long journey back to the laboratory. The white background adds a clean and timeless aesthetic to the image, highlighting the intricate details of the isopod's body. This historic specimen is an essential addition to any collection of Antarctic fauna or marine biology, providing a unique glimpse into the rich scientific discoveries made during the Terra Nova Expedition. The Antarctic Isopod is not only a fascinating invertebrate but also a reminder of the important role that exploration and scientific research play in expanding our understanding of the natural world.
