Isopoda, a diverse group of crustaceans, never fails to fascinate with its unique characteristics and intriguing behavior. From the giant deep-sea isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) to the tiny Santia sp. Isopods living on the surface of a blue sponge (Haliclona sp. ), these creatures captivate our attention. In this captivating picture taken in cooperation with marine researchers, we catch a glimpse of the massive Bathynomus giganteus. This giant deep-sea isopod showcases its impressive size and distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other members of its family. On the other end of the scale, an aggregation of Santia sp. Isopods can be seen delicately residing on a beautiful blue sponge (Haliclona sp. ). These minuscule creatures create a mesmerizing sight as they navigate their way across the sponge's surface. Moving towards colder waters, we encounter Glyptonotus antarcticus, an Antarctic species of isopod that has adapted to survive in extreme conditions. Its resilience and ability to thrive in such harsh environments make it truly remarkable. Closer to home, we find ourselves observing a blackbar soldierfish (Myripristis jacobus), seemingly unaware or unfazed by the presence of woodlice nearby. The common/shiny woodlouse (Oniscus asellus) rests peacefully on moss in Berwickshire, Scotland - showcasing nature's diversity even within small spaces. Venturing into biosphere reserves like Niedersechsische Elbtalaue Biosphere Reserve reveals yet another woodlouse species: Armadillidium pulchellum. These fascinating creatures play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance within their habitats. Transitioning back into marine ecosystems brings us face-to-face with Ligia oceanica - sea slaters that seek shelter under driftwood along strandlines at Kimmeridge Bay, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset.
