The woodlouse, also known as the pill woodlouse, is a fascinating creature that has captured the attention of scientists and artists alike. Picture No. 10855665 showcases this tiny arthropod in all its glory, with its unique ability to roll into a ball for protection. In an incredible Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM), we can see the common rough woodlouse magnified x20 on an A4 size print. This image allows us to appreciate the intricate details of this isopod species called Glyptonotus antarcticus. Dating back to 1833-39, a coloured engraving depicts another type - the common pill woodlouse. This artwork captures its distinct features and showcases it alongside other insects like a cockchafer beetle and butterflies. Speaking of butterflies, there's an enchanting coloured engraving from 1833-39 titled "Butterfly Pea. " It beautifully combines flowers and a bird's nest on a pedestal, creating a serene still life painting that contrasts with the lively world of insects. Moving forward in time to around 1923, we find an illustration featuring various invertebrates including our beloved woodlouse. This lithograph provides insight into different types of creatures coexisting within their ecosystem. A captivating photograph taken in Berwickshire, Scotland shows both common and shiny woodlice (Oniscus asellus) perched upon moss during February. The contrast between their dark bodies against vibrant greenery creates an aesthetically pleasing composition. Venturing further into nature reserves such as Niedersechsische Elbtalaue Biosphere Reserve reveals even more diversity among these armadillidium pulchellum species. These particular woodlice are found thriving amidst lush surroundings within protected areas. Lastly, we have arthropods depicted in c. 1860 colour lithographs showcasing various members of this diverse group.
