Storage jars for olive oil

Storage jars for olive oil in the remains of a house in Bulla Regia, Tunisia. During the reign of emporer Marcus Aurelius in the second century AD, the colony of Sufetula (modern-day Sbeitla or Subaytilah in Tunisia) was one of the major olive producing regions, and by the fourth century AD it was the biggest exporter of olive oil in the Roman world. At that time olive oil was considered inferior to other oils and was used in lamps. These stone containers may have been stored underground. Bulla Regia is unique as the place that Romans built underground to escape the heat

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remains of a house in Bulla Regia, Tunisia, where storage jars for olive oil were discovered. Dating back to the second century AD during Emperor Marcus Aurelius' reign, this region was renowned for its olive production. By the fourth century AD, it had become the largest exporter of olive oil in the Roman world. Interestingly, during that era, olive oil was considered inferior and primarily used for lamps. These stone containers found in Bulla Regia may have been stored underground as a means of preservation. What makes this site truly remarkable is how Romans ingeniously built their homes below ground level to escape the scorching heat of North Africa. The image captures not only ancient architecture but also sheds light on African archaeology and Roman ruins. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resourcefulness throughout history. The intricate design and craftsmanship of these jars reflect both functionality and aesthetic appeal. As we gaze upon this photograph from Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to an era when Bulla Regia thrived as a major hub for olive oil production. It reminds us of our ancestors' reliance on natural resources such as olives and their ability to adapt to challenging environments like extreme heat. Intriguingly preserved through centuries gone by, these storage jars stand as silent witnesses to an ancient civilization's accomplishments – reminding us that even mundane objects can hold profound historical significance.
