Osteoporotic bone
Osteoporosis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the bone of a person suffering from osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease. There is a loss of bone mass in osteoporosis. The irregular trabeculae of this cancellous (spongy) bone are thin with large spaces between them. The bone is also more brittle and hence more likely to fracture. Osteoporosis more commonly affects women due to the reduction in the production of the hormone oestrogen by the ovaries at the menopause. Hormone replacement therapy is used to stop further bone loss. Magnification unknown
