Coloured radar image of Venus eastern hemisphere

Venus. Coloured radar map of the eastern hemisphere of Venus. The map was created using data gathered by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft in 1990-94. The colours indicate the elevation of the surface relative to the mean planetary radius (6041 km). Blue colours denote land below the mean radius; land above the mean radius is coloured green, brown, pink and white (highest). The equatorial zone is dominated by the upland continent called Aphrodite Terra. To the north are the lowlands of Niobe Planitia, to the south is Aino Planitia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured radar image of Venus' eastern hemisphere, revealing the mesmerizing topography of our neighboring planet. Created using data collected by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft between 1990 and 1994, this stunning map provides valuable insights into Venus' surface elevation. The vibrant colours employed in this image represent the variation in land height relative to Venus' mean planetary radius of 6041 km. Land below the mean radius is depicted in serene shades of blue, while areas above it are adorned with an array of green, brown, pink, and white hues - with white symbolizing the highest elevations. Dominating the equatorial zone is Aphrodite Terra, an expansive upland continent that captivates viewers with its intricate details. To the north lie Niobe Planitia's lowlands, offering a stark contrast to Aphrodite Terra's rugged terrain. In contrast, Aino Planitia graces Venus' southern region with its own unique landscape. This remarkable visual representation not only showcases the sheer beauty and diversity found on Venus but also serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our celestial neighbors. As we continue to unravel the mysteries hidden within our solar system through groundbreaking missions like Magellan imagery, photographs like these inspire awe and ignite curiosity about worlds beyond our own.
