EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable specimen of Chalcocite, extracted from the Cooks Kitchen Mine in Illogan, Cornwall, England. The coarse platy structure of this mineral is beautifully captured, revealing thin plates intersecting at perfect right angles. Rising about half an inch perpendicular to its base, the chalcocite then gracefully tapers off towards a point, forming another intricate eight-sided figure. Originally featured in Philip Rashleigh's renowned publication "Specimens of British Minerals" this particular illustration can be found in Volume 1 on Plate 15 as Figure 1. Described as crystallized grey copper ore, Chalcocite is classified as a secondary mineral that typically occurs within or near the oxidized zone of copper sulfide deposits. The Rashleigh Collection proudly houses this exceptional sample which epitomizes the geological wonders found within English and Cornish mines. With its distinct black and grey hues and monoclinic crystal structure, this Chalcocite specimen stands as a testament to both nature's artistry and mankind's fascination with minerals. Andy Tindle expertly captures the essence of this extraordinary piece through his photography skills. This print serves not only as a visual delight but also offers an opportunity for enthusiasts to appreciate the beauty and complexity inherent in our planet's geological formations.
