Picus Brunifrons. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Picus Brunifrons. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

Picus Brunifrons - A Glimpse into the Exotic Himalayan Avian World

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould, in collaboration with John Gould. The enchanting artwork depicts the stunning Picus Brunifrons, a bird species native to the majestic Himalaya Mountains. John Gould's journey into ornithology began when he worked as a taxidermist for the Zoological Society, earning him the nickname "bird-stuffer". His fascination with avifauna from distant lands was ignited in the late 1820s when a collection of birds arrived at the society's museum from the Himalayas. Inspired by this encounter, Gould conceived an ambitious project – publishing hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing these avian wonders to life through her intricate drawings transferred onto large lithographic stones known as "Gould plates". Her artistic prowess beautifully captures every minute detail of Picus Brunifrons' exotic plumage and distinctive tail. This remarkable illustration transports us back to early 19th-century England, where British artist Elizabeth Gould collaborated with her husband John to create breathtaking works that merged artistry and natural history seamlessly. The vibrant colors meticulously added by hand enhance our appreciation for these magnificent creatures. As we gaze upon this close-up view of Picus Brunifrons, we are reminded of nature's boundless beauty and diversity found within remote corners of our planet. This piece serves as both a testament to human curiosity about Earth's fauna and a tribute to two talented artists who dedicated their lives to capturing its essence on paper.
