Vaccinia virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The virus genetic core, consisting of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is green. It is surround by a protein coat, or capsid (blue), which is itself enclosed within a lipid envelope (pink). Vaccinia belongs to the orthopoxvirus group.
