Tuberculosis campaign, early 20th century C017 / 7885

Tuberculosis campaign, early 20th century. Doctor using a stethoscope to check a boys lungs for signs of the respiratory bacterial disease tuberculosis (TB). The doctor is being aided by nurses from what is now known as the American Lung Association (then called the National Tuberculosis Association). Their hats include the distinctive logo of their association, which was founded in 1904 to campaign against tuberculosis. Efforts to reduce the millions affected by TB included an annual Christmas Seal Campaign, and another centred on the Spirit of the Double Barred Cross. This modified Cross of Lorraine became the official anti-TB symbol in 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the early 20th century, we witness a significant moment in the Tuberculosis campaign. A dedicated doctor is seen using a stethoscope to carefully examine a young boy's lungs for signs of the respiratory bacterial disease tuberculosis (TB). Assisting him are nurses from what is now known as the American Lung Association, formerly called the National Tuberculosis Association. The nurses' hats proudly display the distinctive logo of their association, which was established in 1904 with a mission to combat tuberculosis. During this time, efforts were made to reduce the staggering number of individuals affected by TB through various campaigns. One such initiative was an annual Christmas Seal Campaign that aimed to raise awareness and funds for research and treatment. Another notable effort centered around promoting the Spirit of the Double Barred Cross, symbolizing unity against TB. This modified Cross of Lorraine became officially recognized as an anti-TB symbol in 1920. This historical image not only showcases medical professionals diligently working towards eradicating tuberculosis but also highlights how far we have come in our understanding and management of infectious diseases. It serves as a poignant reminder of our collective commitment to public health throughout history.
