TEM of chloroplasts

Transmission electron micrograph of chloroplasts from the yellow portion of a variegated yellow/green coleus plant, Coleus blumei. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis, the process by which the Suns energy is converted into the chemical energy required as food by the plant. The structure of a variegated chloroplast is slightly different from a normal green chloroplast. The granal stacks (thin black lines) which house the chlorophyll pigments are less ordered in the variegated chloroplast. The pigments themselves are also slightly different. Magnification: x5000 at 35mm size, x35, 000 at 8x10-inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of chloroplasts, the vital organelles responsible for photosynthesis in plants. Taken using a transmission electron microscope, this high-resolution image captures chloroplasts from a variegated yellow/green coleus plant, Coleus blumei. Chloroplasts are like miniature powerhouses within plant cells, converting the Sun's energy into chemical energy that fuels the plant's growth and survival. In this variegated chloroplast, we can observe slight structural differences compared to its green counterparts. The granal stacks, represented by thin black lines in the image, appear less ordered in their arrangement. These stacks house essential chlorophyll pigments that capture sunlight during photosynthesis. Not only is the structure slightly different in variegated chloroplasts but so are their pigments. The unique composition of these pigments contributes to the distinct yellow coloration seen here. With a magnification of x5000 at 35mm size or an impressive x35,000 at 8x10-inch size, this print allows us to appreciate nature's microscopic wonders up close. It serves as a reminder of how intricate and complex even seemingly simple processes like photosynthesis can be on a cellular level. This stunning TEM image is brought to you by Science Photo Library—a testament to their commitment to showcasing awe-inspiring visuals from various scientific disciplines without any commercial intent.
