Democritus, Greek philosopher
Democritus of Abdera (c.460-c.370 BC), Greek philosopher. In this engraving, Democritus (left) is shown with a depiction of Eve, behind whom a mason stoops to retrieve a spilt cup. Democritus published works on ethics, physics, mathematics, cosmology and music. Very little has survived but his theories are known through commentaries on his work by later philosophers. In his atomic theory he stated that matter is made up of tiny indivisible particles called atoms (literally, that which cannot be cut). The properties of different substances were determined by the physical features of the atoms. He believed that the motion of atoms was dictated by definite universal laws of nature and not by the will of the Gods. This engraving comes from Symbola aureae

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Greek philosopher, Democritus of Abdera. In this 17th-century engraving, Democritus is depicted on the left, accompanied by a representation of Eve. Behind them, a mason stoops to retrieve a spilled cup, adding an intriguing element to the composition. Democritus was a multifaceted scholar who delved into various fields such as ethics, physics, mathematics, cosmology, and music. Although few of his original works have survived through time, later philosophers have provided valuable commentaries on his theories. One of his most significant contributions was the development of atomic theory. According to Democritus' groundbreaking concept, matter consists of minuscule particles called atoms that are indivisible – hence their name derived from "that which cannot be cut". Different substances possess distinct properties due to variations in these atoms' physical characteristics. Moreover, he believed that the motion of atoms adhered strictly to universal laws rather than being influenced by divine intervention. The symbolism within this engraving adds depth to our understanding of Democritus' philosophy. The serene landscape and monochromatic color scheme create an atmosphere conducive for contemplating profound ideas about existence and nature's inner workings. This remarkable artwork comes from Todd-White Art Photography's collection titled "Symbola aureae" and offers viewers an opportunity to delve into ancient Greek thought while appreciating its artistic representation in German engraving from the 1600s.
