They release chemicals that lead to the formation of threads of the insoluble protein fibrin (also not seen). A fibrin mesh traps red blood cells (red), forming a clot. The clot seals the wound and prevents bleeding. An abnormal clot (thrombus) can occur in an intact blood vessel, where it can cause heart attacks and strokes
