Balloon angioplasty, X-ray
Balloon angioplasty. Coloured X-ray of a balloon catheter being placed in the coeliac trunk of a patient with stenosis (narrowing) of that artery. The aorta, the bodys main artery, runs from top right to bottom centre. The balloon catheter is guided into place by a flexible catheter. Once in place it is inflated to open the artery and restore normal blood flow. The coeliac artery serves the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, intestines and pancreas. The most common cause of stenosis is atheroma, fatty deposits that thicken the inner coat of arteries
