Abdominal spinal nerves
Abdominal spinal nerves. Historical anatomical artwork of the spinal nerves (white) in a human abdomen. This view, from the front, is obtained by removing most of the abdominal organs to reveal the muscles (red) of the back of the abdomen. The lumbar (lower) spine is seen at centre. At left is the right psoas muscle. The left psoas muscle has been removed to show a network of nerves (right) from the spinal cord. This network is called the lumbar plexus. Lower down is another network, the sacral plexus (both sides seen). The largest nerve seen in the lumbar plexus is the crural nerve (the one towards the leg). Artwork from The Nerves of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, London, 1839)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the intricate network of abdominal spinal nerves in a human abdomen. The detailed illustration, dating back to 1839, provides a unique glimpse into the field of anatomy during the 19th century. In this frontal view, most of the abdominal organs have been removed to expose the muscles at the back of the abdomen, depicted in vibrant red hues. At the center lies the lumbar spine, while on the left side we can observe the right psoas muscle. The removal of the left psoas muscle reveals an intricate web-like structure composed of nerves originating from the spinal cord known as the lumbar plexus. Lower down in this remarkable piece, both sides display another network called sacral plexus. Amongst these nerve networks is prominently featured one particular nerve -the crural nerve- which extends towards and serves as a connection to our legs. The artist's attention to detail and anatomical accuracy make this print an invaluable resource for medical professionals and enthusiasts alike. It offers insight into early understandings of neurology and highlights how far our knowledge has progressed since then. This artwork from "The Nerves of Human Body" by Jones Quain continues to serve as a testament to our ongoing exploration and fascination with human anatomy throughout history.
