Thyme leaf oil gland
Thyme leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of the leaf surface of the herb thyme, Thymus vulgaris, showing an oil gland. Two types of trichomes (projections from the leaf surface) are seen: unbranched multi- cellular hairs which appear as bent structures and cover most of the surface; and glandular trichomes (sphere) which are the source of an aromatic oil. These oil glands give this herb its value in cooking and in aromatherapy. Magnification: x473 at 5x7cm size

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a thyme leaf oil gland. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals a mesmerizing view of the leaf surface of Thymus vulgaris, commonly known as thyme. The image highlights two distinct types of trichomes, or tiny projections from the leaf's surface. The first type is an array of unbranched multi-cellular hairs that appear as delicate and curved structures covering most of the leaf's surface. These hairs contribute to the herb's unique texture and appearance. However, it is the second type, known as glandular trichomes, that steal the show in this image. Shaped like tiny spheres, these specialized trichomes are responsible for producing an aromatic oil that gives thyme its culinary and therapeutic value. Thyme has long been cherished for its distinctive flavor profile in cooking and its numerous health benefits in aromatherapy. This close-up view at x473 magnification provides a rare glimpse into one of nature's secretory wonders—the oil glands found within thyme leaves. Whether you're a lover of botany or simply appreciate nature's hidden marvels, this print serves as a reminder of how even seemingly ordinary plants can hold extraordinary secrets waiting to be discovered through scientific exploration.
