Russian space station Mir over a storm on Earth
Mir space station. Fisheye lens view of the Russian space station Mir ( peace ) orbiting over a storm (lower centre) on Earth. Mir was launched in February 1986. Consisting originally of a core module and docking facilities, a variety of science modules have been added to Mir, increasing its mass from its original 21 tonnes to over 100 tonnes. Image taken from shuttle Atlantis whilst it was docked with Mir as part of mission STS-79 during 16-26 September 1996. The missions main purpose was to transport supplies to Mir as well as collecting and returning Shannon Lucid, an American astronaut, to Earth. Photographed over Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean

31"x27" (79x69cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 24x20 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 31x27 inches (787x685mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of the Russian space station Mir gracefully orbiting above a tumultuous storm on Earth. Taken from the vantage point of shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-79, this image showcases the remarkable view afforded by a fisheye lens. The immense scale and power of both nature and human achievement are beautifully juxtaposed in this striking composition. Mir, launched in 1986, began as a modest structure but has since evolved into an extraordinary feat of engineering, with various science modules added over time. Its mass has grown exponentially from its original weight of 21 tonnes to over 100 tonnes. This photograph was taken during a crucial mission that aimed not only to resupply Mir but also to safely return American astronaut Shannon Lucid back to Earth. The location where this snapshot was captured is Heard Island, situated in the southern Indian Ocean. As we marvel at this breathtaking scene from space, it serves as a reminder of humanity's boundless curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. This mesmerizing image is brought to us by Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for capturing moments that bridge science and artistry. It encapsulates the grandeur and fragility of our world while showcasing mankind's incredible achievements in manned spaceflight through Russia's renowned Mir program.
