EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of the Russian space station Mir gracefully orbiting above a tumultuous storm on Earth. Taken from the vantage point of shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-79, this image showcases the remarkable view afforded by a fisheye lens. The immense scale and power of both nature and human achievement are beautifully juxtaposed in this striking composition. Mir, launched in 1986, began as a modest structure but has since evolved into an extraordinary feat of engineering, with various science modules added over time. Its mass has grown exponentially from its original weight of 21 tonnes to over 100 tonnes. This photograph was taken during a crucial mission that aimed not only to resupply Mir but also to safely return American astronaut Shannon Lucid back to Earth. The location where this snapshot was captured is Heard Island, situated in the southern Indian Ocean.
