Pollen grains on a harelquin bug, SEM
Pollen grains stuck on the body of a harlequin bug (Murgantia sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pollen grains are the male sex cells of a flowering plant. They are usually carried to another flower by pollinating insects, such as bees. When the pollen rubs off on the female structures of a flower, fertilisation can occur. Magnification unknown

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of nature, zooming in on a harlequin bug adorned with pollen grains. The colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the reproductive process of flowering plants. Pollen grains, depicted as numerous tiny dots covering the bug's body, play a vital role in plant reproduction. These male sex cells are typically transported to other flowers by pollinating insects like bees. As they brush against the female structures of another flower, fertilization can take place, leading to the creation of seeds and fruits. The image highlights not only the importance but also the fascinating mechanisms behind pollination. The hairs on both the insect's body and pollen grains contribute to their sticky nature, ensuring successful transfer from one flower to another. This symbiotic relationship between plants and insects is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and sustaining ecosystems worldwide. With an unknown magnification level that adds an air of mystery, this false-colored SEM emphasizes every minute detail present on both insect and pollen grain surfaces. Through this lens provided by science and technology, we gain deeper insights into entomology, botany, zoology - all interwoven within this single frame captured by Science Photo Library.
