Middle Eastern alphabets, 1823 C017 / 8056

Middle Eastern alphabets. 19th-century tables showing the scripts and alphabets used in Hebrew, Samaritan (Hebrew and Aramaic), Phoenician (Proto-Canaanite, coin numbers), Syriac (a dialect of Middle Aramaic), Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Chinese characters. Apart from Chinese, these alphabets and scripts were all used in the Ancient Near and Middle East. Coins are shown across bottom. The four tables at left also show ancient and modern versions of the scripts, the names of the letters, and the phonetic equivalents in the Roman alphabet. This page is from Universal Technological Dictionary (1823) by British author George Crabb (1778-1851)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fascinating array of Middle Eastern alphabets from the 19th century. The tables depicted in this illustration, taken from George Crabb's Universal Technological Dictionary (1823), provide an extensive overview of the scripts and alphabets used in various ancient languages such as Hebrew, Samaritan, Phoenician, Syriac, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and even Chinese characters. The four tables on the left side not only display both ancient and modern versions of these scripts but also include the names of each letter along with their phonetic equivalents in the Roman alphabet. This comprehensive selection offers a glimpse into the linguistic diversity that once thrived across the Ancient Near and Middle East. Coins are elegantly arranged at the bottom of this page to further enhance our understanding of these historical writing systems. As we explore this monochrome artwork, it becomes evident that British author George Crabb meticulously compiled this publication to shed light on Oriental studies during his time. With its rich historical significance and intricate details, this print serves as a valuable resource for those interested in language history, linguistics, or Middle Eastern studies. It is truly a testament to human ingenuity and cultural exchange throughout centuries past.
