Gravitational lensing caused by Abell 2218 cluster

Gravitational lensing. Coloured visible light image of gravitational arcs in the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. The thin arc-like features seen scattered around the frame are made by light from very distant sources, some 5-10 times further away than Abell 2218. The cluster is so massive that light rays from background galaxies passing through it are deflected and magnified by the clusters gravity, similar to the way an optical lens bends light to form an image. The study of these arcs will provide a direct glimpse of the evolution of early galaxies. The image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing phenomenon of gravitational lensing caused by the Abell 2218 cluster. In this colored visible light image, one can observe an array of thin arc-like features scattered throughout the frame. These arcs are a result of light bending and magnification from incredibly distant sources, located 5-10 times further away than Abell 2218 itself. The immense massiveness of this galaxy cluster causes it to act as a gravitational lens, deflecting and distorting the path of light rays passing through it. This deflection is akin to how an optical lens bends light to form an image. By studying these remarkable arcs, scientists gain valuable insights into the evolution of early galaxies in our universe. Captured by the renowned Hubble Space Telescope, this extraordinary photograph not only highlights the beauty and complexity of our cosmos but also serves as a direct glimpse into deep space exploration. With its unrivaled precision and clarity, Hubble's imagery allows us to delve deeper into cosmology, unraveling mysteries that have fascinated humanity for centuries. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this awe-inspiring print reminds us that there is still so much left to discover beyond our own planet's boundaries. It sparks curiosity about what lies beyond our reach and ignites a sense of wonderment at the vastness and intricacy of our universe.
