Descartes optics theory, 17th century
Descartes optics theory, artwork. This is the eye diagram from Descartes book Optics (1637). Three external points are shown depicted on the retina at the back of the eye. The light rays from these three points have been focused on the retina by the structures at the front of the eye, including the lens. The image formed on the retina is being observed by the homunculus at bottom - a human figure that is here being used to represent the unknown process by which the brain interprets a visual image. Artwork from Pioneers of Science (Oliver Lodge, 1893)

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures Descartes' groundbreaking optics theory from the 17th century. The intricate diagram showcases the eye's anatomy, specifically focusing on the retina located at the back of the eye. Three external points are depicted on the retina, illustrating how light rays from these points are skillfully focused by various structures in the front of the eye, including the lens. At the bottom of this illustration stands a homunculus - a human figure symbolizing our limited understanding of how our brain interprets visual images. This enigmatic representation emphasizes that even though we can observe and comprehend physical processes like refraction and physiological functions within our eyes, there is still much to uncover about how our mind comprehends what we see. The historical significance of this image is further highlighted by its inclusion in Oliver Lodge's renowned book "Pioneers of Science" published in 1893. Lodge was an esteemed physicist who recognized Descartes as one of those pioneers whose theories shaped scientific progress. This remarkable piece not only offers us a glimpse into Descartes' revolutionary ideas but also serves as a testament to humanity's continuous pursuit to unravel nature's mysteries through science and exploration.
