Coloured SEM of a bile canaliculus in the liver
Bile canaliculus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a human liver cell (red-brown), also known as hepatocyte, and a bile canaliculus (green). Hepatocytes, among other numerous functions, secrete a viscous green-brown fluid called bile. Bile is drained away from the liver through a dense network of bile canaliculi towards the gall-bladder. After a meal, bile is expelled from the gall-bladder and enters the duodenum where it plays an important role in the breakdown and digestion of fatty compounds. Magnification: x17, 400 at 6x7cm size

Bile Canaliculus Hepatocyte Liver Liver Cell
17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a bile canaliculus in the liver. The image, captured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reveals a human liver cell or hepatocyte in striking red-brown hues, juxtaposed against a vibrant green bile canaliculus. Hepatocytes are known for their multifaceted functions, and one of their key roles is to secrete bile - a thick green-brown fluid. Bile plays an essential part in our digestive system by aiding in the breakdown and digestion of fatty compounds. It flows through an extensive network of bile canaliculi within the liver before being drained towards the gall-bladder. The magnified view at x17,400 allows us to appreciate the complexity and delicate structure of this microscopic world within our bodies. This mesmerizing image not only highlights the remarkable intricacy of our anatomy but also serves as a reminder of how interconnected every aspect of our body is. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary glimpse into nature's wonders through this stunning SEM photograph. Let it inspire awe and appreciation for the incredible mechanisms that enable us to function seamlessly on a cellular level.
