Premium Framed Print : Bee mite, SEM

Bee mite, SEM
Bee mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a bee mite on a bee. Some bee mite species feed by cutting into the surface membranes of the bee. Mites are arachnids (8-legged) and are hence related to ticks and spiders. In large numbers they can devastate colonies of bees, which is of particular concern since bees are often agriculturally very important: as both pollinators and honey producers

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of bee mites, as captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals a close-up view of a bee mite perched on the body of a bee. With its vibrant colors and detailed structure, this photograph offers an insight into the hidden realm of these tiny arachnids. Bee mites belong to the same family as ticks and spiders, making them fascinating creatures in their own right. Some species of these eight-legged pests survive by cutting into the surface membranes of bees. However, when present in large numbers, they can wreak havoc on entire colonies, posing a significant threat to both honey production and pollination - roles that bees play crucially in agriculture. The importance of this image lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in raising awareness about the harmful impact that infestations can have on our precious pollinators. By shedding light on this often unseen aspect of nature's delicate balance, it serves as a reminder to protect and preserve these vital ecosystems. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this moment using advanced microscopy techniques while employing false coloring to enhance visibility. This remarkable piece invites us into the mesmerizing world where biology meets artistry – showcasing both beauty and scientific significance simultaneously.
