Aurora from space

Aurora borealis. Coloured combined ultraviolet and optical image of an aurora borealis (northern lights) display seen from space. The aurorae are seen as a ring of light around the North Pole. The most active areas appear red, with less intense activity ranging through yellow to blue. Aurorae are caused by particles from the Sun (the solar wind) interacting with Earths atmosphere. Earths magnetic field channels the charged particles to the poles, where they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, causing them to glow. Image taken by the Visible Imaging System on the Polar satellite in February 2000

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the ethereal beauty of the Aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, as seen from space. The image showcases a mesmerizing ring of vibrant light encircling the North Pole, revealing nature's spectacular display in all its glory. The vivid colors depicted in this photograph are a result of combining ultraviolet and optical images. The most active areas of the aurora appear strikingly red, gradually transitioning through shades of yellow to blue. This stunning phenomenon is caused by particles from the Sun, known as solar wind, interacting with Earth's atmosphere. Earth's magnetic field plays a crucial role in channeling these charged particles towards the poles where they collide with gas molecules in our upper atmosphere. As a result of these collisions, an enchanting glow illuminates the night sky. Captured by the Visible Imaging System on board Polar satellite back in February 2000, this image serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation. It offers us a unique perspective on our planet's atmospheric wonders and reminds us of how interconnected we are with celestial forces. As you gaze upon this awe-inspiring print from Science Photo Library, let your imagination soar alongside those shimmering lights dancing across Earth's polar regions – an extraordinary reminder that even amidst vastness and darkness lies boundless beauty waiting to be discovered.
