23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 8 from the extraordinary collection of 49 original watercolour drawings of animals by Ferdinand Lucas Bauer, created during the H.M.S. Investigator expedition to Australia from 1801 to 1803. This meticulously detailed illustration depicts the Common Wombat, Vombatus ursinus, a large, coarse-haired marsupial native to Australia. Bauer's artistic talent is evident in the furry texture and intricate patterns of the wombat's pelt, as well as the expressive eyes and precise anatomical detail. The Common Wombat, a herbivorous marsupial in the Vombatidae family, is known for its powerful digging abilities and nocturnal habits. The H.M.S. Investigator, under the command of Matthew Flinders, was the first circumnavigation of Australia, and Bauer's illustrations were a crucial part of documenting the diverse wildlife discovered during this historic voyage. This plate, along with the rest of the collection, provides a valuable record of the unique and fascinating animals of the Australian continent during the early 19th century. Ferdinand Lucas Bauer (1760-1826) was a German-born artist who made significant contributions to the field of natural history illustration. His work is characterized by its accuracy, attention to detail, and lifelike quality, making it an invaluable resource for scientific research and conservation efforts. This drawing of a pair of Common Wombats offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of Australia and the important role that artistic documentation played in the exploration and discovery of new lands and species.
