17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This copper engraving, created by Franz Bauer based on a drawing by E. Home for the "Lectures on Comparative Anatomy" supplement published in London in 1828, offers a fascinating glimpse into the medical world of the past. The intricately detailed illustration showcases various types of urinary stones, or calculi, which were a common affliction during that era. The stones, depicted in various sizes and shapes, are arranged meticulously against a plain background, allowing their unique mineral structures to take center stage. Calcium-based urinary stones, which are still prevalent today, were particularly intriguing to medical professionals of the time. The illustration reveals the stones' diverse forms, from smooth, spherical shapes to more complex, branching structures. These stones, often painful to pass, were believed to form due to various factors, including diet, dehydration, and underlying medical conditions. This artwork, with its exquisite attention to detail, serves as a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the early 19th century. It is a reminder of the importance of accurate documentation and illustration in the advancement of medical knowledge. Today, this piece of art and history can be found in the hallowed halls of a library, a reminder of the rich history of medical research and the human curiosity that drives it. The intricate copper engraving process, which involved the transfer of an image from a drawing to a copper plate using a burin, resulted in a high level of detail and precision. The resulting image is a beautiful blend of art and science, a testament to the skill and dedication of the artist and the medical professionals of the time.
