Columba Leuconota, Snow Pigeon. A species of bird in the Columba genus in the Columbidae

Columba Leuconota, Snow Pigeon. A species of bird in the Columba genus in the Columbidae family.. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Columba Leuconota, commonly known as the Snow Pigeon. Belonging to the Columba genus in the Columbidae family, this exquisite bird species hails from the majestic Himalaya Mountains. The engraving was created in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, who was renowned for his taxidermy skills and earned himself the nickname "bird-stuffer" at the Zoological Society. John Gould's fascination with birds from Eastern regions began when a collection of avian specimens arrived at the Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these Himalayan treasures, he conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and depicting a hundred birds altogether. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life; she meticulously made drawings of each bird which were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. These extraordinary lithographs are collectively referred to as "Gould plates". They beautifully capture not only the intricate details of each bird but also their unique markings and behavior. This particular illustration showcases an Asian Snow Pigeon with its exotic tail feathers on full display. Dating back to the early 19th century, this artwork represents both British and European artistic talent within natural history studies. Its vibrant colors, close-up perspective, and meticulous hand coloring make it truly remarkable. Preserved within books and manuscripts throughout history, these illustrations continue to inspire awe even today.
