The Siege of Sebastopol - general view, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Siege of Sebastopol - general view, 1854. Crimean War. Map showing the Russian-held ports of Sebastopol and Balaclava, harbours and warships. On the Black Sea are Allied warships, and also shown are positions of the French and English armies besieging the ports. A Russian deserter came over from Sebastopol, after having received a tremendous flogging for delaying to turn out on the occasion of the last alarm. He said that the Russians had moved all but seven thousand men to the other side of Sebastopol harbour'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Siege of Sebastopol - general view, 1854,' is an engraving from the esteemed Illustrated London News, showcasing a map depicting the Crimean War scene. The map highlights the strategic locations of the Russian-held ports of Sebastopol and Balaclava, with their harbors and warships. Allied warships are anchored in the Black Sea, while the positions of the French and English armies, which were besieging the ports, are also marked. The caption accompanying this map, taken from the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating insight into the events unfolding during the siege. A Russian deserter had shared intelligence about the Russian forces moving most of their men to the other side of Sebastopol harbor, leaving only seven thousand men behind. This intelligence would have been invaluable to the Allied forces in planning their military strategy and potentially turning the tide of the siege. The Crimean War, which took place from 1853 to 1856, was a significant disputed territory between Russia and the Western European powers, primarily Britain and France. The siege of Sebastopol, a major city on the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine, lasted from September 1854 to September 1855, and was a pivotal moment in the war. This map and its accompanying caption offer a glimpse into the geographical features and military positions that played a crucial role in this historic conflict.
