Ceremony of Laying the Foundation-Stone of the New School-House at the Philanthropic Society's Farm, Creator: Unknown

Ceremony of Laying the Foundation-Stone of the New School-House at the Philanthropic Society's Farm, Red-Hill, [Surrey], 1856. The new School-house is the gift of Mr. Gladstone, the treasurer; Mr. Bell giving his gratuitous services, as architect, in its design and construction. It will contain from forty to fifty boys...M. De Metz [sic] came just on the conclusion of the ceremony, and delivered a very eloquent address in French, which the Bishop afterwards translated with a singular felicity and exactness of expression...M. De Metz, whose services and sacrifices in the cause of reforming youthful criminals are so well known...[said]
"The noble science of improving men, of making the bad good, cannot be learnt in a moment - is not every one's acquirement. So high a mission requires self-denial, devotedness of spirit, a thorough morality of conduct; above all, deeply Christian feelings". From "Illustrated London News", 1856

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1856, we witness the Ceremony of Laying the Foundation-Stone of the New School-House at the Philanthropic Society's Farm in Red-Hill, Surrey. The new schoolhouse was a generous gift from Mr. Gladstone, the treasurer, with Mr. Bell providing his architectural services gratis. The school was designed to accommodate forty to fifty boys. The image captures a pivotal moment in the construction process, with dignitaries and community members gathered around the foundation stone. Among the attendees was M. De Metz, whose dedication to reforming youthful criminals was widely recognized. M. De Metz delivered an eloquent address in French, which was translated by the Bishop with remarkable accuracy and precision. In his speech, M. De Metz emphasized the importance of the noble science of improving men and making the bad good. He acknowledged that this mission was not an easy one, requiring self-denial, devotedness of spirit, a thorough morality of conduct, and deeply Christian feelings. The construction of the new schoolhouse represented a significant step forward in the Society's efforts to provide a better future for young boys in need of guidance and support. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the philanthropic initiatives that aimed to transform the lives of vulnerable children in the 19th century. It serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of education and the power of community support in shaping the lives of future generations.
