31"x27" (79x69cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 24x20 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 31x27 inches (787x685mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a haunting scene from the Spanish conquest in the early 1600s. In this illustration by Samuel de Champlain for his Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico, we witness a Spaniard mercilessly flogging indigenous people for their failure to attend church. The image serves as a stark reminder of the brutal methods employed by colonizers in their quest for conversion and control. The composition is filled with tension and despair as men dressed in loincloths are subjected to cruel punishment. The artist's attention to detail highlights the anguish on the faces of these oppressed individuals, while also emphasizing the dominance of their oppressor. This depiction sheds light on one aspect of colonialism that often goes untold - the violent imposition of religious beliefs upon native populations. The presence of a missionary or priest in this scene further underscores the role played by religion in justifying such acts of cruelty. It serves as a chilling reminder that even within places meant for solace and spiritual growth, pain and suffering were inflicted upon those who resisted assimilation. This print transports us back to an era when Latin America was being reshaped through conquest, colonization, and forced conversions. It prompts reflection on historical injustices while urging us to strive towards understanding, empathy, and respect across cultures today.
