Duck-billed platypus
Duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatimus) swimming underwater. The platypus, along with two species of echidna, makes up a unique group of animals, the monotremes. The monotremes are egg- laying mammals that possess a single cloaca (external body opening) that is the end-point for the digestive, reproductive and urinary tracts. The platypus is an aquatic freshwater animal, found in eastern Australia. It may remain underwater for several minutes as it hunts for its favourite prey of shrimps, worms and insect larvae.
