The first plane load of Christmas trippers to fly direct from Coventry to Majorca left

The first plane load of Christmas trippers to fly direct from Coventry to Majorca left yesterday. They could be swimming on Christmas Day and have a turkey dinner on the beach. The 78 holidaymakers were warmly wrapped in winter coats and boots as they waited for their 3.50 pm flight to Palma. But inside their bulging suitcases were all the summer holiday trappings - summery dresses, lightweight suits, sandals and bikinis - all ready to be swapped during their five-day visit. Pamela Foster (19), a secretary at Massye-Ferguson, wasn t too hopeful about the Majorgan temperatures after speaking to a Spanish pilot at the airport. " He told me they were only at 45 deg. F. today." But she added boldly: " I shall go swimming on Christmas Day even if I have to break the ice." Pamela was one of a party of nine people from Alvis Ltd. Coventry, who decided that they wanted and needed a change from the chilly British Christmas. Her mother, Mrs Daisy Foster, from Coundon, Said she was thrilled to be getting away from the kitchen. " We ve had Christmas at home for 21 years, so going away like this is going to be a new, and I hope, a refreshing experience." It was Mrs. Lily Pye, of Allesley, a section leader in production control at Alvis, who decided that a change was as good as a rest, and organised the party into trying Majorca. " I m looking forward to a really traditional English Christmas, " she said, " with lots of turkey and pudding. Its not so much the sunshine I m going for as just somewhere different to go." Kay Travel Ltd. Nuneaton, arranged the five-day trip at a cost of 36 a head. Our photograph show sisters Pamela (right) and Susan Foster of Coventry, waiting to board the aircraft which will take them to Spain.

The First Plane Load of Christmas Trippers Embark on a Sunny Escape from Coventry to Majorca

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, captured by the Coventry Telegraph Archive in 1970, we witness the excitement and anticipation of holidaymakers as they embark on a groundbreaking journey. The image showcases Pamela Foster (19) and her sister Susan, alongside 76 other eager travelers, waiting at Coventry Airport for their direct flight to Palma. Despite being bundled up in winter coats and boots due to the chilly British weather, these adventurous souls are brimming with enthusiasm for their upcoming five-day escape. Packed within their bulging suitcases lie all the essentials for a summer getaway - lightweight suits, summery dresses, sandals, and even bikinis. Pamela's determination is evident as she boldly declares her intention to swim on Christmas Day no matter what obstacles may arise. Her mother Daisy Foster shares Pamela's excitement about escaping the traditional kitchen-bound festivities after spending 21 years celebrating at home. Organized by Mrs. Lily Pye from Allesley through Kay Travel Ltd. , this trip promises not only an opportunity to bask in Majorgan temperatures but also a chance for these individuals to experience something refreshingly different during the festive season. While some seek sunshine and relaxation, others long for a taste of English tradition with turkey feasts and pudding. This remarkable photograph captures both the spirit of adventure and longing for change that drives these holidaymakers towards new horizons. As they board the aircraft bound for Spain, one can't help but feel inspired by their courage to break free from conventionality and embrace unique experiences during Christmastime.
