This watercolor study depicts the skull and lower jaws of a Macropus robustus, also known as the Euro wallaroo or hill wallaroo, a large macropodid marsupial native to Australia. The intricately detailed drawing was created by the renowned English artist Nathaniel Dance (1735-1811) during the late 18th century. Dance was a skilled draftsman and naturalist, who accompanied Captain James Cook's voyages of discovery between 1743 and 1775.
