EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures a pivotal moment during Sir Allen Young's Arctic expedition aboard the Pandora in 1875. The crew, bundled up against the harsh Arctic cold, are seen using one of the ship's boats to hunt for a young polar bear in the icy waters. The Pandora, a sturdy exploration vessel, had been used by Sir Allen Young in two daring attempts to search for the elusive Northwest Passage along the northern coasts of Canada and Alaska. The Northwest Passage, a long-sought-after sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, had eluded explorers for centuries. Young's expeditions were not only significant for their potential to discover this historic passage but also for their efforts to locate any traces of the lost Franklin Expedition of 1845. The Franklin Expedition, led by Sir John Franklin, had set out to find the Northwest Passage but ultimately met a tragic end, leaving behind a mystery that captivated the world. As the crew of the Pandora braved the frigid waters, they would have been acutely aware of the risks they were taking. Polar bears, powerful and agile hunters, were a formidable presence in the Arctic. The capture of this young bear would have provided valuable food and fur for the crew, as well as a trophy of their successful hunt. This engraving, a testament to the courage and determination of the crew of the Pandora, offers a glimpse into the history of Arctic exploration during the late 19th century. The image, from the Illustrated London News, is a valuable historical document that continues to fascinate researchers and history enthusiasts alike.
